José de Campos Contente (1905 - 1957) was born in Coimbra, Portugal, where he lived regularly. Pupil of A. Augusto Gonçalves and student at Avelar Brotero Industrial School, later he became pupil of Carlos Reis, Veloso Salgado and Varela Aldemira at the School of Fine Arts of Lisbon. He also studied in Paris, where he learned with Lucien Pénat and Jacques Beltrand.
He practiced painting, but he distinguished himself especially in drawing and etching. He received several prizes in exhibitions of the National Society of Fine Arts and Humanities and other events. He is represented at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (Lisbon), the National Museum Machado de Castro (Coimbra), the Museum Grão Vasco (Viseu), at the Pinacotheca of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), the Museum of Parma (Italy), as well as in Portuguese and foreign private collections.
