John Laing and Son Ltd's Southern Region began building the Aylesbury Estate in 1967. At the time, it was the largest industrialised housing scheme ever undertaken by a London Borough. It was to provide home for over 7,000 people in low-rise and high-rise blocks of flats and maisonettes. To construct the flats, Laing used the Danish Jespersen (or Jesperson) system of prefabricated parts and precast concrete panels, which it had bought the rights to in 1963.
