The batik industry was slower to use synthetic dyes, and in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, nyonyas had no choice but to pair their organdie baju panjangs with the subdued tones of naturally-dyed sarongs. Only in the late 1930s did the chemically-dyed sarongs match the organdies. But by this time only older, conservative women wore the baju panjang, because most 'modern' nyonyas had switched to lace kebayas.
