Blue-and-white Porcelain Cup

18th century

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea

This is a small-sized blue and white porcelain cup. The surface of the cup is painted with simplified grass designs. This relic is one of the burial items recovered from the grave where Princess Hwayu (10th daughter of King Yeongjo, 1740-1777) and her husband Hwang In-jeom (Unknown-1802) were interred together. More than 30 relics that the Royal pair would have used in their lifetime, including stationery, accessories, and pottery, were discovered from their grave. Some are considered to be items that Hwang had brought back from China of Qing Dynasty where he visited a number of times.
