The Tibetan or Bodhi script is used by Buddhist communities along the border regions of India from Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, to West Bengal. Its elegant letters lend themselves to calligraphy that is angular rather than rounded. Many examples of decorative lettering can be seen on milestones, prayer wheels, and painted scrolls. Shibori, which is a combination of running stitch embroidery and dyeing, is a tie-dye craft technique from Japan that has recently been adopted in India. The design is embroidered on folded cloth in a running stitch. The portions covered with thread resist the colour. When the cloth and threads are opened out after dyeing, the designed areas appear as mirror images.

A quilt cover in indigo blue has shibori in geometric patterns. The Bodhi script says kha - jhe - gyur - gyi - pema - szum, meaning “happiness and sunshine have no fixed time for occurring, sorrow and gloom have no fixed time for disappearing”.
