The National Park Service provided strict guidelines by which to design and construct camping facilities. According to the National Park Service, the cabin camps were to be laid out with the hub of major buildings being the central area and the units the radiating spokes of a wheel. The dining halls and kitchens, in particular, were to provide wide and pleasing views from the dining room. They also had to have ample light and cross ventilation for both dining room and kitchen, and a relationship between these two units for a maximum of efficiency with a minimum of steps. This blueprint of the dining hall and kitchen at Cabin Camp 3 fits those standards as do all of the buildings in the camps.
