McLoughlin Brothers of New York produced the board game "A New Game Skirmish at Harper's Ferry" in 1891. The American Civil War, still fresh in American memory, prompted production of numerous war games during the later years of the 19th century. The Skirmish at Haper's Ferry game, a strategy game, recreates a battle. In actuality, John Brown's famous raid on the Southern armory at Harper's Ferry resulted in many deaths and in Brown's hanging. The event helped catalyze Northern and abolishonist sentiments in 1859, two years before the war began. McLoughlin chose to depict Union soldiers, in their recognizeable blue coats, on the box cover for this game.
