America was divided in 1940. Many people believed the country should join the war effort, World War II, in Europe, while others believed the United States should stay out of it. All this changed when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941. A small New York firm produced the Democracy board game in 1940, "the fascinating game of national defense." The makers definitely believed in joining the war effort, as players in the game collect funds to pay for various defensive wartime tools, from new air bases to new kinds of weaponry. The player with the most defense units is the winner.
