McLoughlin's late-nineteenth century board game "Leap Frog" carries an image of rough-and-tumble boys playing leap frog. However, the game itself is a simple race game, with a capture element which sends the opponent backwards. At that time, leap frog itself was a game for boys. Girls were considered too delicate for such a rough play activity.
