McLoughlin's board game "Matrimony or Old Maid" actually bears little resemblance to the famous and ancient card game called Old Maid. Instead, humorous quotes related to spinsterhood, love, and marriage cover certain squares on the simple race-style board. Old Maid the card game enjoyed great popularity at the end of the 19th century. Doubtless McLoughlin hoped to capitalize on some of this popularity with a board game.
