Race games are among the simplest and most popular types of games, easily understood and played by young and old alike. Some of history's earliest race games were called "Steeplechase" after New York City's famous Steeplechase Park horse race track, and after a type of horse racing called a "Steeplechase." During the mid-20th century, in spite of the increasing popularity of the automobile and auto racing, horse racing remained popular. One of the jewels in the American triple crown of horse racing is the Kentucky Derby race. Whitman Publishing devised a Derby board game in 1938, and published it, in various different formats, through 1969.
