In 1970, Parker Brothers scored a big hit with the board game Masterpiece: The Art Auction Game. Apparently the timing was just right because the game sold briskly from then on. Although considered a "wealth accumulation" game similar in a way to Monopoly, Masterpiece differs because players are attempting to purchase works of art, which are assigned random values during the play of every new game. But watch out! Some of the paintings are forgerys, and worthless. Smart players can bluff their opponents and sell them a forgery, or bid low for a valuable masterpiece. The game's design is credited to the famous toy design firm Marvin Glass and Associates.
