Why is the Monopoly board game so popular? One reason is that the look and name of the game is used as advertising by several large American businesses. Many people are familiar with the McDonald's fast food restaurant Monopoly game, in which customers get playing pieces in the form of properties each time they purchase food. Similarly, several major supermarket chains utilize a similar system. Shoppers are given a free game board and then receive property playing pieces each time they shop. Filling out a specific property with four (in this example) stickers, which fit there, wins whatever prize is listed. Safeway supermarket, a large East coast chain of stores, utilizes a Monopoly ad campaign.
