Pressman Toy Corporation introduced a game it called Chinese Checkers, specifically under the name "Hop Ching Checkers," in 1928. Though neither Chinese in origin nor a version of checkers, the game became popular. It was based on a German game, "Stern Halma" (Star Halma) which in turn was modeled after an earlier American game called Halma. Halma was similar but not star-shaped, and it was invented by a Harvard surgeon around 1883. Several manufacturers made versions of Chinese Checkers throughout the 20th century and the game remained popular.
