The phenomenon of the Pokemon media franchise began as a video game in 1995, the invention of Satoshi Tajiri. The series is based on fictional characters called "pokemon" which humans capture and train to fight each other for sport. Just four years later, when the franchise was rapidly gaining fans and popularity, Hasbro published a Pokemon board game, licensed by Pokemon's owner at that time, Nintendo. The game follows the general pattern of the video games and the collectable card game. Players traverse the game board collecting Pokemon characters which then fight each other at specific locations on the board.
