McLoughlin's "Rival Policeman" game bears a copyright date, on the box cover, of 1896. It is one of the most sought-after games by game collectors today. Besides a colorful and action-packed box cover graphic, the game itself has some of McLoughlin's finest detailing. A secret flap on the side of the game board hides a compartment for the playing pieces. the board itself is made of both wood and cardboard. The playing pieces are made of turned wood (the "crook" pieces) and cast metal (the policemen figures.) And finally, the game's subject refers to a period, in the history of New York City, when the city police force and a state-controlled police force worked at the same time (but not cooperatively) to protect the citizens. So the game reflects an important historical event as well.
