The Conflict Games Company was founded in the late 1960s by John Hill, a military historian and strategy game designer. Hill also owned a hobby shop which sold war games, among other merchandise. Eventually Game Designers' Workshop (GDW) purchased Conflict Games in its entirety. John Hill was extremely well-respected in the war gaming community and he is possibly best remembered for designing the game Squad Leader for Avalon Hill, an award-winning game and a game credited with helping to fuel the war gaming boom of the late 1970s.
