Parker Brothers' late 19th century game "The Drummer Boy" follows the methodology of many popular rags to riches games of the time period. In those games, players begin as an office boy and the winner becomes company president. In this version, players enter the game as a drummer boy but the winner is the first to reach the rank of colonel.
