Containing a rich history dating back to ancient times, board games delight children and adults alike with their playful nature. Though these games come in a wide variety of topics and themes, many games connect with the culture of their times. Wealth accumulation games reflect the growth of a consumer society, war games re-create familiar battles, and educational games prepare children for school and work. Popular television shows, films, books and other entertainment media also find their way into board games, allowing players to actively participate in their favorite fictional worlds.

This board game is based on the American medical drama "Emergency!" The show aired on NBC from 1972 to 1978 and included 134 episodes. The series focused on firefighter paramedics and hospital emergency room staff, who worked together to assist disaster victims. "Emergency!" is credited with creating a movement to improve emergency medical services across the United States, and also for encouraging the medical community to provide CPR and first aid training to the general public. The series also included references to real life disasters such as a California brush fire in 1973. This game simulates events in the television series, as players draw cards describing emergency situations that take place across the game board.
