McLoughlin Brothers' board game "The Letter Carrier," a combination board and card game, dates from the late 19th century. Supplied with sheets of letters, which are then cut into small individual letters, players travel the board route, delivering letters to specific addresses along the way. The first player to deliver all his or her letters wins the game. This game helped teach both spelling and counting.
