Containing a rich history dating back to ancient times, board games delight children and adults alike with their playful nature. Though these games come in a wide variety of topics and themes, many games connect with the culture of their times. Wealth accumulation games reflect the growth of a consumer society, war games re-create familiar battles, and educational games prepare children for school and work. Popular television shows, films, books and other entertainment media also find their way into board games, allowing players to actively participate in their favorite fictional worlds.

This board game is based on the American Western television series "The Rifleman," which aired on ABC from 1958 to 1963. Set in New Mexico Territory in the 1880s, the show stars Chuck Connors as Lucas McCain, a widowed rancher who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Lucas is shown to be completely devoted to raising his only son, Mark, and protecting him from the violence of the West. "The Rifleman" was one of the first television shows to feature a widowed parent raising a child alone. In this board game, players take on the role of either Lucas or Mark, and attempt to be the first to move a herd of cattle from their corral on one side of the board to their ranch on the other.
