The Worst-case Scenario Survival Handbook appeared in 1999. Authored by Joshua Piven, this began a series of approximately twenty books published throughout the 2000s with generally similar titles, from specific topics such as "The Worst-case Survival Handbook: Travel" to compilations such as "The Worst-case Survival Handbook: Extreme Edition." The books were written without humor, but the often-bizarre situations made for interesting reading. Subjects range from "how to escape from killer bees," to "how to escape from quicksand," for just two examples. In 2005 University Games published a board game based on this series of books, "The Worst-case Scenario Survival Game." A simple question-style card and board game in which correct answers advance the player to the finish, the game sold briskly on the popularity of the book series.
