The Walter Lantz animation studio created cartoon character Woody Woopecker in 1940. The red-headed bird is most typical of the so-called screwball characters of the 1940s, although he grew tamer as time passed. Lantz produced theatrical cartoons longer than many of his contemporaries, so the character remained a staple of Universal Studios, through the television medium, through the early 1970s. Like so many popular live action and cartoon characters from the later 20th century, Woody Woodpecker appeared in board games. Whitman produced this example, licensed by Lantz and Universal, in 1972.
