The carton shows the Rhine river in the background, with Germany personified by “Germania” in the foreground. Further ‘typically German’ attributes include a German flag, an oak branch, as well as the “Wilhelm” steamship afloat on the river. The folding game board comprises 100 numbered fields with views of towns and landscapes; the Rhine is featured in the middle. The game is an indication that the Rhine valley was particularly romanticized in the 19th century. The area with its castles and vineyards became a place of longing and ultimately developed into a typical destination for tourists from abroad within Germany.
