Boat Paddles

National Museums of Kenya

National Museums of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya

Short paddles made by men from the wood of the munguvwe tree carved with a panga. This is usually not used to paddle the boat but to keep it on a straight course. One man pulls the boat whilst the other paddles on the appropriate side to keep it going in the required direction. It is used particularly when waves on the river are high.
