Sinding is known as a "Lofoten painter" and is said to have "discovered" Lofoten as a subject of art, even though others had painted Lofoten before him. His first journey to Lofoten was in the winter 1881-1882, where he did studies and sketches of the landscape which he took with him back to his atelier in Münich.
