Brown earthy rock in different sized nuggets piled together. The Norse smelted bog iron nuggets to make nails. Iron tests of the slag (smelting waste) found on L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site matched the iron in a nail also found on the site, proving that the nail was made from bog iron harvested at L’Anse aux Meadows.
