Bolesław Chrobry

The statue depicts Bolesław Chrobry, first crowned king of Poland. According to the book written by Katarzyna Chrudzimska-Uhera about Jan Szczepkowski, the figure is a fragment of the “Piast Pillar” project. In the first centuries after his death, King Bolesław I was called “the Great”. It was only at the very end of the feudal fragmentation that his nickname stuck to his name. The philologist Ryszard Gansiniec claims, it happened because in the times of Przemysł II, when the projects to rebuild the Kingdom of Poland were entering the decisive phase, the nickname “the Great” seemed to be not characteristic and individual enough to correspond to his contribution in developing the powerful Piast state. “Chrobry”, in the early medieval Polish language, means “brave”.

The sculpture is 22 cm tall, 15 cm wide and 11.5 cm deep.
