Bolsover Colliery was first sunk by the Bolsover Colliery Company in 1889. It remained in the company's hands until nationalisation in 1947. After this time it remained the area headquarters up until 1987. It eventually closed in 1993 as a privately owned pit.

The Bolsover Colliery Company focused on providing welfare for their employees. This included providing housing, schooling, churches and sport. These facilities were mainly provided in the specially built pit village known as New Bolsover. The building pictured is one of the many buildings provided for the recreation of he company's employees.
