This object is the tail unit of a container for incendiary bombs. Thermite sticks, a type of incendiary bombs, were de-ployed in large quantities in the Second World War to create firestorms, as for example during the bombing of Hamburg in the course of Operation Gomorrah. A total of 80 million incendiary bombs were dropped over Germany during the Second World War.
