Kiss József költeményei (The Poetry of József Kiss), Budapest, Révai Publishing House, PLM Library, Inv. Number D 2.205

József Kiss (1843-1921) was a poet and an outstanding representative of the Hungarian literary scene at the turn of the century. He founded and edited the weekly literary journal called A Hét (Week), which was the first typographical medium of modern Hungarian literature. At the beginning of his career he became popular by writing ballads, but later abandoned the rustic theme. His poetry is considered to be transitional; rustic, rural, epic and lyrical features got combined in the poems. Thinking about the unity of the forms of expression in the various areas of art was characteristic of the period at the turn of the century. That time the book illustrations became equal to the literary texts, and the fine, artstic-looking books also got popular. This volume was published in 1897 and contains the collected poems of József Kiss. It is considered as a special edition, because the author asked the artists of one of the most famous Artists' Colony, the Nagybánya Independent Painter's School, to illustrate his poems. The works of Károly Ferenczy, Béla Grünwald, Simon Hollósy, István Réti and János Thorma are not just simple illustrations but also stand-alone works of art. This Art Nouveau volume was published by the Révai Publishing House in a gilded, raised print cover, made in Nándor Gottermayer's bookbinding art institute in Budapest. Gottermayer not just introduced the industrial bookbinding in Hungary by employing hundreds of workers in his mechanized workshop, but he also evolved the decorating techniques of the period. The spine and the cover of this ornate volume are gilded, and the latter has a printed pattern as well. The stylized, decorative letters are bordered by a non-figurative frame decoration, a feature of Art Nouveau. The ornamental motifs show rustic features.

Kiss József költeményei, Budapest, Révai, 1897, PIM Könyvtár, ltsz. D 2.205

Kiss József (1843–1921) költő, a századforduló magyar irodalmi életének kiemelkedő alakja. Megalapítja és szerkeszti A Hét című szépirodalmi hetilapot, amely a modern magyar irodalom első sajtóorgánuma lesz. Pályája kezdetén balladáival vált népszerűvé, majd szakított a népiességgel. Költészete átmeneti jellegűnek tekinthető: népies és városi, epikai és lírai vonások vegyülnek műveiben. A korszakra jellemző a különböző művészeti ágak egységében való gondolkodás és kifejezésforma. A könyvillusztráció ekkor válik egyenrangúvá az irodalmi szöveggel, és ekkortól kap szerepet a szép, művészi kiállítású könyv. Az 1897-ben megjelent, Kiss József összegyűjtött verseit tartalmazó kötet különleges kiadás: a költemények illusztrálására az egyik leghíresebb magyar művésztelep alkotóit kérte fel a szerző. A nagybányai iskola képzőművészeinek – Ferenczy Károly, Grünwald Béla, Hollósy Simon, Réti István, Thorma János – munkái önálló alkotásként is megállják a helyüket. A szecessziós album a Révai Kiadó gondozásában jelent meg, dombornyomású, aranyozott bőrkötésben, amely Gottermayer Nándor budapesti könyvkötő műintézetében készült. Gottermayer munkáinak köszönhető a magyar könyvkötészet nagykorúvá válása. Nemcsak a nagyipari könyvkötészet meghonosítása miatt (gépekkel felszerelt műhelyében több száz munkást alkalmazott), hanem mert a korabeli díszítési technikák nála teljesednek ki. A díszalbum nyomottmintás fedéllel, gazdag fedél- és gerincaranyozással készült. A stilizált, dekoratív betűket a szecesszióra jellemző nonfiguratív keretdísz szegélyezi. Az ornamentikus motívumok népies vonásokat mutatnak.
