Leiden, Netherlands

This papyrus leaf is part of the Book of the Dead of Padikhonsu, a kind of manual for the journey to the afterlife. The owner of this papyrus is depicted on it twice. On the left he is offering two unguent vases to the god Osiris. The hieroglyphs at the top explain: the unguent offering is carried out in ritual fashion, with two unguent vases for Osiris, by Padikhonsu, the overseer of the grounds of the temple to Amon. Lying on the sacrificial altars in front of Osiris are fragrant blue lotus flowers.
