The Book of the Dead papyrus of Irtyuru was purchased in 1919 by James Henry Breasted from a dealer in Cairo. When first purchased, the papyrus was still rolled up and was flexible enough to be unrolled. The papyrus was sent to Hugo Ibscher who expertly cut the papyrus into individual sheets and mounted the sheets under glass in order to preserve the papyrus and allow for its study and exhibition.
