Original Woodstock Music and Arts Fair promoters Michael Lang, Joel Rosenman, and John Roberts sought to capitalize again on their earlier investment by sponsoring a festival commemorating the 25th anniversary of that historic event. Though the performers at Woodstock '94 largely represented a new generation of America's youth, part of the event's success would depend on re-creating nostalgia for the original Woodstock. "Woodstock 1969 - the first festival," introduced by Jerry Garcia, who performed at the 1969 festival with his band The Grateful Dead, attempts to take us back to the original festival, recalling the "trials, tribulations, and joy" of the event through hundreds of photographs and short essays by people who were there. Steeped in nostalgia, the book offers a glimpse of the legendary festival in all its celebration and discomfort - three days of peace, love, rain, mud, and rock-and-roll. The book is also an attempt by those involved with the '69 version to reclaim the festival from what they view as vicious media vipers. Recalling the mainstream media's harping on immorality and substance abuse, promoters of this book want to reclaim Woodstock for the "peace, love, and humanity" it represented for them.
