Although Marc gained fame for his expressionism and the painters’ group, Der Blaue Reiter, this ex libris, which he designed for himself, is a subtle fusion of Art Nouveau and symbolism. Only hinting at plasticity, the work is dominated by lines. The giant palette and the tree that grows into it and branches out from it symbolize the eternal renewal of art.
