Peter Behrens was an architect, painter, graphic artist, applied artist and not least a typographer, a member of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony. His distinctive style, which had solidified by 1904, also dominates his bookplate, which focuses on essential elements. The dynamic lines of the border are reminiscent of the abstract ornamentation of Van de Velde, the inimitable master of Belgian Art Nouveau.
