Border with a Captured Prophet before a Prince or King

Simon Beningabout 1525 - 1530

The J. Paul Getty Museum
Los Angeles, United States

An unidentified Old Testament prince or king sits in profile holding a long staff and wearing a pointed hat, underlining his similarity to Pontius Pilate, who appears with the same trappings in a similar position on the facing page. The prophet, standing before the throne to be judged, is bound in the same manner as Christ on the facing page. By showing the individuals in similar costumes and poses, Simon Bening visually emphasized the analogy between the story of this Old Testament prophet and Christ's meeting with Pilate in the New Testament.
