Border with Elijah Raising the Son of the Widow of Sareptha

The J. Paul Getty Museum
Los Angeles, United States

The widow of Sareptha kneels over the pitiful dead body of her young son while the prophet Elijah calls him back to life. In the distance at the right, the miraculously resurrected little boy departs with his mother, his hand clasped in hers. Simon Bening paired this joyous Old Testament event with a parallel event from the New Testament, the Raising of Lazarus, on the facing page. The text discusses the power and obedience of Christ, while the two images demonstrate the fulfillment of the Old Testament in the New Testament.
