At the bottom of the page, Moses removes his shoes to avoid defiling holy ground while gazing at God above in the burning bush. Because the burning bush was on fire but not consumed, Christians came to see this event as a prefiguration of Mary's conception of Christ without losing her virginity. Thus the image of the burning bush complements the accompanying text devoted to the birth of Christ and the image of the Nativity on the facing page.
