Depictions of pilgrims, like on this work made toward the end of his life, were one of the ceramic artist’s favorite motifs, as he particularly excelled at ornamental painting. The plain, silhouette-like image without background is said to be reflecting the artist himself in his pursuit of spiritual truth. The figure painted on the center of the round vase also appears on the cover of Leach’s book “Drawings, Verse & Belief”.
