In south central Europe, the older part of the pre-Roman Iron Age, from the 8th to the 5th century BC, is named the Hallstatt Culture, after a place where finds were made in Upper Austria. The wealth and power of rulers and warriors was reflected by elaborately constructed tombs and valuable grave goods. In the 5th century, the Celtic La Tène culture appeared in the western territory of the Hallstatt Culture. The La Tène Culture’s most conspicuous archaeological legacy was the development of a distinctive artistic style.
