The J. Paul Getty Museum
Los Angeles, United States

A bowl with a pair of lion protomes projecting from the front rim opposite a short, laterally extending tube that opens into the bowl. The lions have blunt, rounded ears and deep, hollow eyes, possibly once inlaid. Incised lines indicate their muzzles. The mouths show sharp teeth and protruding tongues. The head on the left has a hole pierced through from side to side. The spout is decorated on the top with three incised lines and two more on each side. Below the rim is an incised chevron pattern, except between the feline heads, which is decorated with vertical lines. On the underside are crossed ladders: two pairs of parallel lines forming a cross, filled with horizontal lines in a ladder pattern, as if to indicate straps. The rim is chipped, with a fragment reattached on the right side and a large chip missing on the underside. This example belongs to the class of north Syrian "lion bowls" or spoon-stoppers, which were attached to a separate flask and used to dispense unguents and libations.
