Box decorated with the motif of a phoenix among Paulownia leaves

The decoration is made with the traditional makie (sprinkled gold powder) lacquer decoration technique applied to a nashiji (pear skin) finish. Some details are in silver. These kinds of decorative techniques, developed since the 9th century, are a distinguishing trait of Japanese lacquers.
