An original interpreter of the pictorial style of the Novecento movement, with some hints to German Expressionism of the time as well, Bevilacqua, a painter from Palermo, often drew on the world of sports to find his characters. In this work, he portrays two boxers, a frequent theme of Fascist painting. The latter’s interest in celebrating the body and physical strength emerges in the characters’ sturdy figure and defined contour of the one shown from the back. The scene, in opaque colours, shows the athletes during a break or while preparing for the match, and communicates fraternal and human intimacy.
