This boy’s bike was used by two generations of Richmonders in the 20th century. The original owner received the bike as a Christmas present in 1937 or 1938 and later used it to deliver Richmond News Leader papers. The bike was purchased for $40.00 from C.W. Pinnell, Inc. on West Broad Street.
The second owner was a younger cousin whose father worked at the Pinnell store 1945-1963 selling bicycles other sporting equipment.
The bike still retains it Richmond City bike tag on its rear fender.
C.W. Pinnell, Inc., a family-owned Richmond hardware store, was a long-time Westfield/Columbia bicycle dealer. Since Pinnell also owned Richmond’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle dealership, the company nicknamed its bicycles “Harleys.” Pinnell sold Westfield/Columbia badged bikes from the 1930s to the 1970s, using different variations of the “Harley” badge.
