One of Abraham Bloemaert's most charming genre pieces is undoubtedly this image of a laughing boy, identified as a carnival reveller by his rumbling pot and bizarre headgear. It was probably painted between 1625 and 1630. The painting shows both the influence of the Utrecht followers of Caravaggio and painters in Haarlem, particularly Frans Hals.
