Branchiosaurus

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt
Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Branchiosaurs are small, salamander-like animals that belong to a very primitive group of amphibians. Their skeleton is only weakly ossified and some of the fossils show the impressions of external gills. This identifies them as the larval stages (juveniles) of larger amphibians. Some Branchiosaurus species may have reached sexual maturity in their larval stage already without a prior metamorphosis.
