When a plot to assassinate President-Elect Abraham Lincoln in Baltimore was uncovered, Lincoln’s friend and bodyguard Ward Hill Lamon offered him these brass knuckles, along with a knife and goggles. Detective Allan Pinkerton, charged with Lincoln’s protection, disapproved, saying that he “would not for the world have it said that Mr. Lincoln had to enter the National Capital armed.”
