Hygiene considerations initiated by World War II prompted women across Europe to protect their hairstyles with headscarves decoratively into turbans. This was taken up here by Paris milliner Davis and fashioned into a durable model of brown felt. Berlin fashion designer Gerd Hartung reported that it was common, particularly among fashionable women, to tie an empty tin can beneath as additional support for taller decorative turbans.
