One of the most characteristic genres in Dutch painting is the still life. Before the middle of the seventeenth century there was no general term for pictures depicting inanimate objects. They were simply called by what they represented, such as a"banquet piece" or a "smoking accessory". Haarlem artists painted mostly "breakfast pieces" consisting of a small number of everyday objects placed on the edge of a table.
